Features of the future

Modern scientific achievements enter the daily lives of people with giant steps. In front of our eyes and with our participation, people’s lives’ changed. This is particularly important today- in a crisis,of global climate change and a growing shortage of food and raw! The problems are clear and hardly anyone disputes the fact that the development of biotechnology is viewed with dread and anticipation, even a little fear and transcribed the capabilities of the witch. It is believed to have come into this world to become reality ”miracles”of modern biology. All this caused great interest among students in tenth grade of school “Dimitar Talev”, City Dobrich, but only two of them- Martin Ivanov and Sizen Ertan of 10 class, under the direction of Adriana Mihailova - teacher of biology, decided to participate in III National Essay Competition, organized by AgroBioInstitute. From 4 proposed themes the they chose the following “Biotechnology - technologies of the future or the future of biotechnology.”

In their essay clarifies the emergence of modern biotechnology methods, that are based and the objectives they face. We all started to use with the following ”miracles”- tube babies, plants that fertilize themselves, cell hybrids between tomato and mosquito, tamed microbes producing obedient human hormones, industrial microorganisms that are carried synthesis of protein, amino acids, vitamins and antibiotics. In front of our eyes all that turns from extravagant laboratory developments to production technology. From biotechnology is expected highly productive varieties plants and livestock breeds, new energy sources, such as microbiological synthesis of “synthetic oil”, receiving potent vaccines against infectious diseases and effective ways to eliminate the defects in heredity, opportunities for control of malignant changes in cells and reliable weapons in the struggle for longevity.

How do scientists hope to achieve this? Which laws are taxed? What tools used? What are the products of biotechnological processes? What will bring us biotechnology in recent years to tackle the shortage of food in the world and protecting the environment? What are the social consequences of development and application of biotechnology? What are the prerequisites for the emergence of biocommunity? The authors of the essay have tried to provide answers to all these issues, realize that not all possibilities, tasks and objectives are exhausted, entrusted to modern biotechnology. Many of regard to their development can be like fiction - it is so unusual, but among all the facts there are actual achievements and remain conscious scientific plans, whose implementation will be witnesses. Committee of experts from research institutes and government organizations assess developments and calls for rewarding students and teachers at a ceremony held on June 3 in the Hall of the Faculty of Biology at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. For great joy the essay of students from school” Dimitar Talev” was ranked I st place. The award was presented by Mr. Stephen Adams Smith- Deputy U.S. ambassador to Bulgaria to Sizen Ertan student class Xa. The awards were attended by Mr. Hoa Hyun- Agriculture attaché at the U.S. Embassy, who thanked the students and teachers for participation in the competition and wished to visit the schools of the winners early next year. On behalf of all participating Sizen Ertan thanks for the excellent organization and briefly explain in English what  includes this essay.
